Vauxhall Unleashes 170MPH Insignia VXR SuperSport, Slashes Price to Under £30K

More than a year after Opel presented the Insignia OPC Unlimited with an unrestricted top speed of 270km/h (168mph) to the rest of Europe, Vauxhall is now following in the footsteps of its sister company releasing a similar version of the UK market Insignia VXR.

Vauxhall's version is named the Insignia VXR SuperSport and it replaces the current Insignia VXR. Just the like Opel model, the VXR SuperSport does away with the speed limiter allowing the car to hit 170mph (274km/h), or 15mph (24km/h) more than its predecessor. Acceleration from 0-60mph (96km/h) remains the same at 5.6 seconds.

Spied: Opel Insignia OPC Facelift Prototype Offers First Glance at Restyled Interior

We have already scooped the regular versions of the European market Opel Insignia facelift a couple of times, but now our spies have snapped the range-topping OPC (sold as the Vauxhall Insignia VXR in the UK) undergoing tests at the Nürburgring track.

Not surprisingly, the OPC model will receive a similar suite of styling tweaks as the normal versions of the series (marketed as the Buick Regal in North America) and which include redesigned bumpers, a new front grille and possibly changes to the headlamp and taillight fixtures.

New Opel Astra OPC / Vauxhall VXR Vs. Renault Megane RS 265 Cup

The new Opel Astra OPC, otherwise known as the Vauxhall Astra VXR, is the latest arrival in the European hot hatch segment. If there's one model it has to beat - aside from the ever-popular VW Golf GTI, it is the highly regarded Renault Megane RS 265 Cup.

In terms of specs, the two models are similar with the Astra OPC / VXR sporting a 2.0-liter turbocharged four that produces 276hp (280PS) and 400Nm (295 lbft) of peak torque channeled to the front wheels via six-speed manual and a limited slip differential.

MR Car Design Slams Down and Powers up the Opel Insignia OPC

For its next project, German tuning house MR Car Design has selected the Opel Insignia OPC sports sedan, which is the European sibling of the Buick Regal GS, though instead of a 270HP turbocharged four and front-wheel drive, the Opel gets a more potent 321hp (325PS) V6 turbo and AWD.

The first thing you'll notice about MR Car Design's Insignia OPC is how low it sits to the ground, something that was made possible thanks to a height-adjustable G-Ride air suspension from Reil Performance.

Hot Opel Astra OPC with 276hp Storms the 2012 Geneva Motor Show

GM's Opel division is challenging both the 250-horsepower Ford Focus ST and the 267bhp (270PS) Volkswagen Golf R with its brand new Astra OPC that will be sold as the Vauxhall Astra VXR in Britain.

Revealed to the public for the first time at the ongoing 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the new Astra OPC is based on the sporty looking three-door Astra GTC hatchback adding to the mix a powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 276bhp (280PS) output and maximum torque of 400Nm (295 lbft).

A six-speed transmission and a mechanical limited slip differential on the front axle drive the front wheels allowing for a top speed of 250km/h (155mph). Opel has not yet confirmed acceleration times.

As with the rest of the Astra GTC range, the OPC model gets the GM/Saab sourced HiPer Struts (High Performance Struts) on the front axle while the company's engineers also made changes to the suspension, steering wheel and brake systems.
